Autumn of 1974 saw Hans Kok (Sunbeam Imp) as champion of the Dutch Touring Group 2 class up to 1000cc.
In 1966 he had started his career driving his mother's Simca 1000 in the first Group 1 (standard, then) saloon car races. Lateron he was driving an NSU in the same class. Soon, he started with rallycross, too.
In 1974, '75 and '76 he drove his Hillman Imp and won a few national titels (sponsor: Randstad).

Transavia/RTR had announced that they would be using a Sunbeam Imp, but it was still in England in George Bevan's workshop, waiting to get tuned and prepared.

When the Steinmetz Opel Commodore which had been ordered for Rob Slotemaker was still not delivered, the Transavia- RTR team replaced Hans Kok for their Hillman Imp by Rob Slotemaker. Slotemaker never drove the Imp faster than Hans Kok did.

1973

In 1973 Hans was able to buy back his Imp.

In 1973 Hans Kok (far right, in between the Daf 66 and the Imp) managed two teams:

That year Hans Kok won the championship for Group II up to 1000cc driving the Hillman Imp - despite his three broken ribs due to a nice new curve in the Zandvoort circuit called the Panorama.

The Team wasn't rich. Panels weren't simply ordered as needed. To get the Imp rolling again, parts were needed that couldn't be gotten at once. They went for a marauding expedition and saw an Imp the village of Weesp. The owner, a racing fan, had heard of the accident and sold his Imp for 17.50 Guilders to Hans Kok.

Kok controleert race per radio

Zandvoort, zaterdag

Kok checks race by radio

Zandvoort, Saturday

After months of preparations racing driver Hans Kok from Weesp comes up with a scoop this weekend. During the national races at the circuit of Zandvoort he will remain in radio contact with his pit.

So this time no information through the normal pit boards and signs, but an antenna, "Because," says the twice Dutch champion:. "It is important to the driver to get immediate information. Tactics play a big role in competition and from your car it is difficult sometimes to assess your situation. From the pit one can often determine best how to act in a race.

The last few races we drove with four different groups (classification by cc - Ed.), mixed. If you are with a few opponents in a fight, it's hard to pay attention to the flag signals from the marshals. Huub Vermeulen has been victim of that kind of thing a few times. Through the radio can you be informed."

Ahead

The Randstad-sponsored, who already has built up a considerable lead in the championship with his Hillman Imp ("I am the only one who has won four races") is of course aware that this experiment has some disadvantages and problems. The idea is not new since in the long distance races they already used it, though they discarded it later on. However at Zandvoort this Telecom is new.

Concerns

Kok on the subject: "I know that there are some concerns, try talking and steering at the same time. Therefore we have decided that the driver determines whether we can speak. As you approach the Panorama curve at full speed and the pit crew starts talking to you, you lose your focus. Through a button on the horn I can decide when to have contact. Technically, we have mastered the problem. Now we need to sort out the management. I know at least that a lot of interest exists: especially from the world of rallying. Although the rally teams keep in contact with each other through intercom, during the rally there is no communication with the service crew."

No danger

Jan Groot, who designed this telecom, has ensured that a special (obviously secret) frequency is selected which does not endanger the radio of the race organisation.
